Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
