Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
