Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps.
