Be smart, play clever, and master craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
