Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
