Be brilliant, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
