Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
