Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
