Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
