Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps.
